Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible for the health and well-being of all animals at the Suzhou site.
- Establish appropriate programs to prevent, control, diagnose, and treat diseases and injuries. Ensure clinical care and health surveillance of laboratory animals comply with applicable regulations, internal Zoetis guidelines/standards.
- Develop and maintain SOPs for animal restraint, sedation, anesthesia, analgesics, and euthanasia, ensure all animal experiment procedures within the facility are conducted in accordance with the SOPs.
- Optimize the animal vendor system as well as animal transportation and reception, ensure animals health and meet study requirement.
- Supervise the quality of animal husbandry conditions, ensure that the housing environment and biosafety comply with lab animal requirements.
- Collaborate with Principal Investigators (PI) and study personnel to support research projects including but not limited to, protocol development, model development, anesthesia/analgesia guidance.
- Provide training to PI and study personnel on animal welfare, relevant regulations and guidelines, and experimental procedures.
- Serves as a voting member of the institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC), review animal use protocols, provide technical expertise to PI, participating in facility inspections and program reviews, and address animal welfare events.
- Maintain AAALAC accreditation at the Suzhou Site, responsible for updating AAALAC’s Program Description (PD), prepare annual report, and related documentations, lead tri-annual Site Visit.
- Leverage VMRD Attending Veterinarian network to provide technical consultant for animal health issues and animal welfare improvement.
- Direct, implement and oversee health monitoring, developing, and implementing corrective actions for deficiencies and technical oversight of veterinary staff.
- Ensure reporting all animal welfare concerns and involvement in the analysis and resolution.
- Other activities related to animal welfare and clinical care.
- Weekend/holiday coverage may be required on a rotating schedule.
- Coverage for daily clinical veterinary activities may be required. May be required to work with zoonotic animal pathogens and chemicals. There may be handling of zoonotic organisms and working in ABSL-2 facilities requiring showering in/out procedures.
Requirements
- Master’s degree or above, major in veterinary medicine, clinical veterinary, with national vet certificate.
- With 8 years’ experience in research animal facility management, operation, vet program.
- Expertise in IACUC, AAALAC, animal welfare, biosafety, laboratory animal husbandry, vet care in research study.
- Strong learning ability, excellent problem-solving skills, and proactive attitude.
- Be proficient in English listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours and travel as required.
- Commitment to promoting animal welfare, the 3R’s and ethical research practices.
